Dylan Lauren in dress by Dad

August 31, 2011

I’ve been meaning to post about Dylan Lauren’s wedding gown since it was reviled in Vogue’s August issue (the “Age Issue”)…For her June wedding to husband Paul Arrouet, Dylan wore a custom dress designed by her fashion royalty father, Ralph Lauren.  Can you even imagine how special the design process was for the both of them?  You always hear people say, “own the dress… don’t let the dress wear you…” and I think that Dylan’s stunning gown follows these rules to a T.  Not only does the handmade silk tulle and duchess satin gown fit her like a glove, but…

There was a bit of hype surrounding the design of the gown – I myself was anxious to see if Ralph could surpass all of our expectations…  To, me the dress is a flawless success.  I don’t think just any designer could have pulled this sort of dress off for one of their daughters…  Ralph took very special care in making sure that the dress said “Dylan” – that it was perfect for her and only her, something she would love.  In his interview with Oprah, Ralph said, “I had to do something that was better than ever before… That’s the only daughter I have. I wanted to just give her something that she’d really treasure, give her something that would be really amazing, and I wanted her to feel fantastic.”  My heart just melted.  While the Vogue article pays special attention to the 37-year-old bride’s professional success with her Dylan’s Candy Bar store empire, it does pay homage to the lovely relationship the Lauren family seems to have.

Stay tuned… Ralph is also designing a wedding gown for his future daughter-in-law, Lauren Bush.  Lauren and David Lauren will wed this weekend (!!) at the Lauren ranch (17,000 acres) in Colorado!

Astier de Villatte

I like the idea of collecting things but I’ve yet to find something I truly love enough to start one.  At the moment I can say that I have two bastardized collections: nail polish and pigs.  I could go on forever about both but I’ll save it for another time.  Because today I’m posting about a collection I completely envy – Caitlin Flemming’s (of Sacramento Street blog) collection of Astier de Villate pieces.  For those of you that have been following Caitlin’s lifestyle blog for as long as we have, the creamy white ceramics are so her… They perfectly align…

You can really get a sense of her style and how she incorporates her Astier collection into her home by reading her Sneak Peek” home feature that was recently on Design*Sponge.  In the feature, Caitlin shares that she and her mom give each other an Astier de Villatte piece every year for Christmas (not once have they ever given each other the same thing!) – is that not the sweetest tradition between a mother and daughter ever?  Our mama has a few Astier ceramic pieces that I have always loved but never given much thought to besides “oooh I do love this serving piece”… So not only has Caitlin totally inspired me to start a collection of my own (one that I can have forever and possibly pass-down one day), she has really made me take a closer look at the terracotta goods that are all handmade in Paris!

The images above are photographs shot by Sophie Delaporte for Astier (via Vogue Italia).  Like the company’s website, the images are mysterious and moody – I love the dark contrast they have with the all-white products.

Packaging Pretties

August 29, 2011

If my purchases were based solely on packaging, you can bet your bottom dollar that my shower and bathroom cabinets would be filled with Bumble and Bumble products.  For a few years I have had this mild obsession with the look of Bumble and Bumble products.  And they just keep getting better and better.  In 2000, B and B launched their much-loved (loved by me at least) Surf Spray.  This bottle has a very distinct look that is unlike any of their other products.  And do you want to know what inspired the look of it?  The neoprene suits worn…

And the Curl Conscious products – doesn’t the curvy paisley design that graces the bottles seem perfectly in line with curly-q hair?  Or the gold donning the Shine collection.  I’ve gotta say though that my most favorite is the ombre-looking Quenching and Mending bottles.  My hair certainly doesn’t need anymore quenching, but it could always use some mending.  That mending mask may just have to be my next hair-care purchase.

Any other packaging/Bumble and Bumble junkies out there?  I know I’m not the only one…

I wish I was wearing…

Something big is happening in the Dallas area right now – it’s raining.  Kind of – it’s more like lots of dark clouds and rain to the south of us – but I did have 3 drops hit my windshield on the way to work so like I said, it’s a big deal.  Because we in Texas are going through this extreme drought thing right now, I kind of forgot what it was like to see cloudy dark skies.  It’s not as epic as the awful rains and floods that are hitting/hit New England (you all are in my thoughts),…

I’m crazy for these spiked “Astrid” stud earrings by Katie Diamond (first seen in a frost color at BHLDN but they no longer have them on their site – but they have the spiked gem necklace and it’s on my “to buy” list!), the black is so edgy but not over the top.  FACE Stockholm is the new J.Crew nail polish line and the Pulm Forgot color above is so bright and fresh – my nail color collection is always taking new members.  And last but not least, this loose knit Savanna sweater from Calypso is cozy but still light enough to wear today in the oppressive Texas heat and it will still be great for fall/winter.  No wellie boots though. The thought of having my feet confined in hot boots is enough to make me feel nauseous.  Have I mentioned it’s hot here?  Ok I’m done.  Hope you all have a wicked good Monday!

MOVING.

August 27, 2011

It’s what we’ve been doing… Moving in together that is.  Since yesterday morning we’ve been working like goats in the Texas heat to bring together the best of both our worlds.  It’s been a lot of work but we’re excited that for the first time in many years we will be living together again! Hope you all have a FAB weekend! Party for us.  Piñatas rule. Especially when they are glittery zebras. (Image via B for Bonnie)
