Black for my Bedroom

November 29, 2011

As I have talked about before, I’ve never been a big fan of black (in my wardrobe or my décor) until now.  Call me Rachel Zoe’s goth wannabe copy-cat but I am wild about black and if I could, would dress myself in it from head to toe.  I digress… Right now my bedroom is a combination of white, cream and off-white colors with small touches of color (small meaning hardly any – and I like it that way).  I love the white on white color pallet mixed with my wood furniture pieces and seagrass headboard – but now that mom…

I love the white on white color pallet mixed with my wood furniture pieces and seagrass headboard – but now that mom swiped my desk chair and my bedside table lamp for her new house, I’m needing replacements. And I’m thinking black.

I know my inspiration images (first and last) aren’t of bedrooms but I’m crazy about how the black + white color schemes look edgy and cozy with the warm wood tones, textures, lighting, and hints of gold and silver.  Maybe the black and white python tray I have in my room is what’s been making me think the black could work (the image of the tray above is from Lonny Mag but I have the exact same one and you can get yours here!).

I’m going to start small with the mod black desk chair from The Container Store – it’s inexpensive so I might go DIY crazy and attempt spray painting the legs gold.  And if I hate it I guess I can always return it for one in white.  Next up is a lamp for my bedside table… I really like this mercury glass jug lamp from Anthro because its rustic finish adds some warmth and flecks of black, but I’m not sold on the shape yet.  Any of the other accent stuff above would be perfection.  I adore the texture of the felt pillow, the geometric pattern of the cozy blanket, and the framed art piece is my new obsession – it says “I do not regret anything” – so French and so chic.  Throw in the industrial black desk lamp and I think I’ll be happy.  Promise to share pictures if this bedroom masterpiece comes together…

Did Meghan hack your blog?? Ha! As long as you never forget the flawlessly coordinated color palette of our room in Oxford… (pink & blue & orange & a little purple & green & yellow)

  2. love, love, love! I have a black and white Frette duvet and vintage mercury glass lamps in my bedroom…I really think you might be my interior design soul mate!

I hope you had a fab thanksgiving!

  3. I love that French print, seriously gorgeous. I might need that. Love the pillow as well. The only thing I would advise against is an actual black piece of furniture. Every speck of dust is visible on black at all times, even if you literally dust it every day (as I learned by having a black vanity!)

  4. If you aren't wild about the shape of Anthro's mercury glass lamp you can make a D.I.Y. mercury glass lamp using Krylon's Looking Glass Spray Paint on a plain glass lamp. The spray paint dries with a mirror-like finish. Just be sure to spray the glass base of the lamp with water first. Then spray the Glass Spray Paint on the lamp base while it is still wet. This will help achieve the blotchy look of real mercury glass. Just a thought!

And I'm loving black and white right now too! It's such a timeless color combo but it always seems so fresh!

  5. I have never done black in my decor although these photos are inspiring. I'm loving grey right now, heather grey like the felt pillow.
