Strawberry Thief

Sally and I got the new J.Crew “Style Guide” catalogue delivered yesterday and there’s a lot of goodness in its pages.  I dog-eared a couple of pages but stopped in my tracks when I saw the baseball cap of my dreams.  Part of the book was devoted to the Liberty of London prints J.Crew is using for the season – for anyone unfamiliar, Liberty of London has been around since 1875 and is widely known for floral motifs – all the prints are from the archives of L&L and are featured on everything from clothes and accessories. Which brings me back to the hat.  The lush print is called “Strawberry Thief” (which only adds to it’s coolness factor) and features “tiny birds that have a taste for strawberries, this floral print was created by famed textile designer William Morris in 1883.”  I mean, if I had to choose one thing I could not live without this season it would be this hat.  Although, I was also drawn to this clutch and these heels.  Ugh… J.Crew you know what you’re doing.

I wore the sweater above to work one day and this is what happened… Email from Aubrey to me: “Did anyone… tell you that you have a big hole in your shirt?”  Email to Aubrey from me: “SHIT. No? Where? Can you see my bra? I’m so embarrassed.”  Next email from Aubrey to me: “It’s like this…” sent with an attached picture she had drawn in paint-shop (or whatever that weird program is that let’s you draw pictures) showing me, the holes in my sweater, a pink bra strap (I wasn’t wearing a pink one) and then a bunch of…

That said, I like my slashed sweater.  Sally and I have it in brown too (you can see it in this post) and we originally found them after seeing Meg sport them.  I like that it’s an edgier version of a cozy knit sweater and it’s especially perfect for this time of year now that the temperatures do weird things and it’s hot one minute and cold the next.  The one I’m wearing is no longer available (or at least I couldn’t find it) but I love these other slashed and holed knits: one, two, three, four.

At Home with Jenni Kayne

When I came across one of the above photos on Pinterest the other day it was one of those instances where I re-pinned it and then quickly followed the picture to its original source to find more of the magic.  No surprise here when I came to find out that it was non other that the home of the uber-talented Jenni Kayne.  The Los Angeles home is pretty much perfect in every way in my book – warm woods mixed with mostly neutrals and lots of pretty soft textures all surrounded by an abundance of windows letting in loads of natural light.  Kayne’s house manages to look lived in, warm, and family friendly while also being perfectly aesthetically pleasing both architecturally and interiors-wise.  I love the combination of the homes’ modern lines and natural elements like reclaimed woods and travertine floors and the views of the gorgeous backyard throughout the home certainly doesn’t hurt either.

While the bones of the house and the furniture are of neutral colors, Kayne managed to bring color into each room through the use of artwork, accessories, and rugs.  Even her two little one’s playroom is neutral in the best possible way.  Who needs juvenile primary colors, when you can have something like they have?  Cozy textures and the most whimsical decor are both timeless and child-friendly.  The same can be said for Jenni Kayne’s children’s rooms – I am kind of speechless over her daughter Ripley’s nursery.  That framed Hermes scarf, the butterfly installment on the ceiling, and the light fixture – what a magical place to wake up to each morning as a baby.  I think I could go on for days about why I am completely in love with this home.  This will definitely be saved for the archives as inspiration for a future home:)

P.S. – If you’re like me and have been coveting a pair of Jenni’s d’Orsay flats, now is the time to get them… Because Shopbop is having their pre-spring sale!  Shop and get up to $300 off?  Um, that’s major.  Just use the code SPRINGEVENT at checkout.  I want these or these babies so, so much…

Beauty Dish

February 26, 2013

Since my first “beauty dish” seemed like a hit, I thought I’d do another round up of some products that I’ve been loving.  Yes, some of the things have been gifted to me to try – but I’m sharing them with you chickens because even though I wouldn’t have necessarily bought them at first glance, I have be obsessed with them and think they deserve the spotlight.  Sometimes it’s the products you don’t think are “you” that end up being favorites… At least that’s how it is with me! – Sam’s Natural, Men’s Natural Deodorant: Ohh yeah, deodorant.  I’m going…

Sam’s Natural, Men’s Natural Deodorant: Ohh yeah, deodorant.  I’m going there.  So I’m going to assume that a lot of you have heard that a lot of anti-persperants and deodorants aren’t great for you because of the aluminum they contain.  I won’t get all science-y on you but you can read more about it all here.  My friend Aubrey is the one who told me about Sam’s Natural Deodorant – it’s anti-microbial, free of metals and parabens and sulfate, and is handmade  in small batches from all natural ingredients.  It also smells AMAZING.  Like, so good.  It’s not going to keep you from sweating (that’s an antiperspirant, friends) but it’s a safe and natural product that makes me smell like a dream (even after a mid-day workout).  I just realized that West Elm now sells this deodorant for women, but I’m going to stick with my manly stuff.

Maybelline ColorSensational Lipcolor in On Fire Red (gifted): The first time I put on this lipstick I did it as a joke while at work.  I thought, “This Washington-Apple red is going to look horrendous on my weird lips and make me look like a clown – this will be hilarious.”  But then when I talked to people to get reactions everyone was complimenting the color.  My prank was ruined but my lack of confidence wearing bold lip color was shattered.  It was a major moment… So now when I’m feeling particularly unkept (dirty hair in a bun, casual outfit, bags under eyes) or when I want to get fancy, I put this on and feel like rawr.  The formula is really smooth, not chalky or dry, and you can layer a couple swipes to make it as bright as you want.  I don’t know if the On Fire Red color would work on every skin tone but for some reason it does on me (evidence here – agree or disagree?).

Clarins Double Serum (gifted):  Oooo – there is nothing that I love more than trying out anti-aging face stuffs.  I have forehead “expression lines” that I want to get rid of!  Clarins’ Double Serum is a new hot-off-the-press item for age control and both Sally and I love it.  It has 20 “pure plant extracts” that work to reactivate your skin’s vital functions.  What you get is skin that’s hydrated, more firm (they do call it extra-firming after all), reduced wrinkles (true), and an even skin tone.  We pat the serum into our skin each morning (a couple minutes after we’ve washed and moisturized with our normal products – and several minutes before we start putting on make-up) and have noticed that our skin looks and feels much healthier and firm…  If you’re looking for a good every-day serum you should check it out – it’s getting rave reviews by other users, too!
