Washable fashion: most all runway looks do NOT fall into this category. The beautiful clothing creations by labels and designers are works of art, but they’re not often comprised of pieces that can be laundered outside of dry cleaning. Seeing an increased demand from consumers for washable garments, the CFDA partnered with Tide and Tide Pods to crate the Washable Fashion Initiative. The program aims to educate new designers and the fashion industry as a whole about the benefits and possibilities for creating more fashion pieces that use machine-washable fabrics.
As real women (who do laundry and hate dry cleaning) we were really amazed and excited to hear about this program. Our personal closets have a much higher ratio of pieces made with materials that can we can launder ourselves—to see the fashion industry promoting awareness of the needs of real women is so inspiring and realistic.
Even more inspiring is to see the the CFDA Washable Fashion Initiative come to life with a partnership between Tide Pods and designer Tracy Reese. As a CFDA member, Tracy became an ambassador of the new Washable Fashion Initiative and the more she learned about Tide Pods and the research that goes into their performance, she was prompted to rethink ways to incorporate washable fabrics into her own designs. In her words, “Just because a garment is made from washable fabrics doesn’t mean it has to sacrifice anything in terms of design.”
Tracy has created two potential runway looks for her Fall 2014 collection in two different variations (all above!) and Tide is asking fans to weigh in on what look they’d like to see walk the runway this February! All four looks are on Tide’s Pinterest page…the two versions of the looks that get the most repins will be the ones seen at New York Fashion Week. It’s an epic project that will hopefully spark a motion in the industry to include more washable materials in future designs. We’re encouraging all of you to head over to the Tide Pinterest page and repin your favorite version of each look—you’ll be personal part in this exciting initiative! Our favorites: Look one in “Amber,” and Look two in “Navy!”

We’ll be supporting the Washable Fashion Initiative all the way to NYFW this year and will be attending Tracy Reese’s show with the winning washable looks.
