Now that it’s officially May (by the way, did this month sneak up on us or what?), we hope you’ve marked your calendar for May 11th – Mother’s Day. It’s a pretty significant day because moms (step-moms, grandmothers, mother-figures) have one of the hardest jobs on the planet and honoring them is so special. We are lucky in that we have both a mama and a step-mom to celebrate and each year we look forward to gifting them something that some how matches our appreciation for all that they do. Bottom line: no gift like that exists, moms are super women. But we still like to find pretty presents none the less.
Some of you may not have heard about HMK before but being Kansas City natives we learned all about the boutique-style retail experience from our family back home as soon as the first store opened in KC. The store concept from Hallmark (based in KC) brings shopping and personalization together to create an elevated experience unique to the market place. What really sets HMK apart is that they offer in-store personalization using the latest technology and exclusive designs allowing you to put your personal touch and/or monogram on a ton of amazing products. The second HMK opened in Southlake Town Square (just outside Dallas, TX) last week and it didn’t take us long to get out there and explore. While browsing all the items – everything from home décor, kitchen items, kids and baby gifts, accessories, Hallmark greeting cards, and gift wrap – we both decided on the spot that we needed to pick out Mother’s Day gifts.
Since we’re always on a time crunch (Mother’s Day is just a little over a week away!) and need to get our presents in the mail next week, we decided on items without personalization but vowed to re-visit the store soon because all the items and ways to fancify are so great. We’re spoiling the gifts we got our mama and step-mom for the sake of showing you what’s available at HMK…hope they still act surprised next Sunday!
For our mama who loves pictures and begs for us to send and print her new ones, we picked out a silver frame and put in a picture of her five girls (us and our three sisters) taken at the beach last summer. Sorry for leaving you out, brothers! The frame came with a mat that can hold a 4″x6″ photo or be removed for an 8″x10″ one. It’s hard to find pretty, silver frames that are unique and nice-looking and HMK had a large offering to choose from. Another offering they had? Chocolate. Delicious confections by Kansas City chocolatier Andre’s and Dallas native Kate Weiser. For our step-mom we found a darling flower dish that’s silver with a cast enamel coating of aqua. We filled it with some Andre’s chocolates but picture her using it as a catch-all for her every-day jewelry or in the kitchen as a tables cape or appetizer piece.
Our family is big on cards and it was our favorite part of being in the store – tonssss of gorgeous Hallmark cards organized by category lined many of the walls. Whether you prefer sentimental or humorous cards, there’s literally something for everyone and every occasion. A lovely woman hand wrapped our gifts to perfection (while we watched, mesmerized by her skill and use of double-sided tape) and we’re a little too excited to put both pretty packages in the mail along with our cards.
The whole one-stop-shop experience was amazing. We only wish you could get everything HMK offers in their two stores online but alas, you’ll have to make a trip to one of the locations closest to you (or peruse the photos on their Facebook page and call into the stores to have them shop for you!). A third store opens in Denver this June!
