Holey Tee Shirt

June 24, 2014

I have been getting a lot of, “Did you pay for those holes?” questions with my ripped jeans, torn shorts, and this holey tee shirt. Indeed, I did in fact pay for an intentionally “damaged” piece of clothing. But how cool does it look? When the girls at Cabana Instagrammed a snap of IRO Clay shirts (re: full of holes) months ago I made my way over to the purple door house to make one mine…now that they are back in stock after being sold out I might have to pick up another color. When the girls at Cabana Instagrammed a snap of IRO Clay shirts (re: full of holes) months ago I made my way over to the purple door house to make one mine…now that they are back in stock after being sold out I might have to pick up another color. Because I’d like to think that a little bit of tatter mixed with sleek and clean pieces is a nice juxtaposition (and you all know I’m all about the contrast). Any of you guys pay extra for torn clothes or do you prefer to break things in yourself?

Good Monday morning to you all! To us, there’s no nicer way to start a new week than with an amazing giveaway…make it a giveaway that involves beauty products and we consider that doubly good. As consistent Amazon shoppers we were so, so excited when their beauty team reached out to us about partnering together. What makes Amazon such a go-to for us is that it’s a one-stop-shop for everything from coffee table books (like the Weddings and Movie Stars one above!) and coffee to cleaning supplies and beauty supplies. The prices are unbeatable and shipping / returns are easy.

Since Friday marked the first official day of summer, we decided that a selection of “summer beauty must-haves” was the perfect way to select a bundle of beauty products. We worked with the Amazon Beauty team to source the best-of-the-best from their beauty and luxury beauty departments and know you’ll be obsessed with everything we picked out!

Amazon Beauty will be gifting the following 10 items to two lucky readers:

  • kate spade new york Cosmetic Case: the cutest way to contain all your beauty loot and perfect for sumer travel.
  • St. Tropez Gradual Tan Plus Firming 4 in 1 Lotion: sunless tanning is the safe way to get your glow on – the fact that this is a firming formula makes it an even better product. St. Tropez is a personal fave for a natural, streak-free tan.
  • Hampton Sun SPF 30 Lotion: sunscreen that’s light, not sticky, and contains anti-oxidants to help reduce premature signs of aging while combating the sun’s harmful rays. Did we mention that it also smells incredible?
  • Juice Beauty Blemish Clearing Cleanser: all the extra time you’ll be spending outside can make your skin more susceptible to breakouts – this all-natural face wash hydrates while it works to keep your skin clear and healthy. The reviews rave about it’s effectiveness!
  • L’Occitane Shea Butter Ultra Rich Body Cream: the best way to keep a tan and hydrate your dry skin from pool chlorine and/or sand and ocean water is with a great body cream. From the scent to the texture, using this body butter is such a luxury.
  • butter LONDON Nail Lacquer in Trout Pout and Teddy Girl: summer calls for color! Paint your fingers and toes in coral and baby pink – two hues that compliment glowing skin. We love butter for the high-gloss-finish and for being free of formaldehyde, toluene and DBP.
  • Lorac Blush/Bronzer Duo in Hot & Spicy: a two-in-one bronzer and blush combo that’s seriously gorgeous and flattering on almost any skin tone.
  • Stila Color Balm Lipstick (choice of one color!): smooth, creamy, and full of properties that deliver hydrated and healthy lips. We love it in the two colors above: Vivienne and Evangeline.
  • Eyeko Fat Brush Mascara: if you hate waterproof mascaras you’ll love this water-resistant alternative. We love how natural it looks (less is more when it comes to summer beauty!).
  • Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner: skip the eye shadow when getting glam and opt for a little liquid liner for a chic, minimalistic look. This felt pen applicator is the easiest to use and stays put all day. Our favorite liner, hands down!

Warby Parker Classroom, TX

June 20, 2014

Did any of you watch The Magic School Bus while growing up? Ms. Frizzle was an enthusiastic teacher who took her pupils on crazy learning adventures in the school bus (thus the name). Even though the concept was sort of outrageous (no bus full of children could go inside a human body, back to prehistoric times, or under the sea) I was really, really into the show. As an adult, when the Warby Parker school bus rolled into town over a year ago for their Class Trip project across the country, the transformed bus felt somewhat magical with the throw-back decor and built-in shelves housing hundreds of frames all available to try on. Dallas only had a few days with the WP bus before it went back on the road to hit up other cities…

Shopping the entire Warby Parker selection in Dallas was once a fond memory but this week it became a permanent reality when the brand opened the Warby Parker Classroom just days ago. After spending more than 8,550 miles on the road, the WP team chose Dallas as the location for the beloved Class Trip bus to rest and opened the first Texas retail experience at 2008 North Henderson Avenue. The Classroom is a unique blend of two shopping experiences in one. The freestanding store (with the giant pencil sticking out of the roof) features 1950s decor along with shelves of glasses and independent books selected by the in-house Warby Parker copy team. Parked outside and just steps away from the classroom sits the school bus – equipped with more shelves of glasses, vintage books, a map of the Class Trip excursion, and other special finds. Between the classroom and the bus, every single pair of Warby Parker glasses is available to try on.

After seeing the set up in person before the grand opening party Thursday night, the novelty of having the whole collection at my fingertips was very exciting. I was impressed that nonprescription frames and sunnies could be bought and taken home on-site (while prescriptions can be ordered from the store and shipped within days) and that the reference desk in the classroom could help with adjustments, pickups, and more.

The Karlie Kloss x Warby Parker collaboration launched just last week and I was really eager to try on the three different styles of sunglasses. Guys, they are beautiful…so different than anything WP has done before and each shape is so flattering. I ended up taking home the Marple style in heirloom gold but I will probably end up going back and getting a pair of the Julia, too. If you’re a local or planning a trip to Dallas anytime soon, make sure you stop by the store – it might be a classroom set-up but the experience is much more fun than school!

Carrying the Catalina

Going somewhere this summer? We are…weekend trips to Austin, Houston, San Francisco, home to Kansas City, and a few other spots are on our calendar for the upcoming months. The bags that have been serving for our travel and in-town needs is The Catalina by Lo & Sons. Even while we are in Dallas it seems like we are always doing something – heading to the pool or gym, running errands, or spending the day babysitting little kiddos. The bags that have been serving for our travel and in-town needs is The Catalina by Lo & Sons. We’ve been using the tote in the Pale Pine color for over a year (you might remember this post) and were really excited when our friends at L&S told us about all the three new colors released for this spring/summer. Indigo (what Sally’s carrying), Midnight Ash (Molly’s bag), and a purple hue called Thistle are great additions to the two existing softer neutrals that the bag is available in.

As much as we love the new colors, we love the functionality of The Catalina so much that it could be any hue and we’d want to use it. Unlike a lot of other tote bags we’ve tried for weekend getaways, this one is extremely light weight and the two canvas straps are comfortable enough to sling the bag on our shoulders. The exterior and interior pockets help us stay organized but the best feature is the bottom zippered compartment that we use for shoes, make-up bags, hair brushes, and our straightener and curling rod. Something about having that separate space makes it so easy to pack and the bag feels like it has more space. The bottom compartment is also great for packing towels for the pool and stashing running shoes, dirty clothes, etc. when going to the gym.

Since so many of you probably also have summer travel plans in the works, Lo & Sons is offering all A Piece of Toast readers 20% OFF anything on their site with the code “APOTSUMMER2014” at checkout. We obviously suggest getting a Catalina bag for weekend travel needs but we couldn’t live without our O.G. Bags when flying (best under-the-seat-in-front-of-you bag ever). The discount code is only valid until the end of July so make sure you take advantage of it soon!

Subtle Pattern Mixing

June 18, 2014

Considering that I’m the sister that wears the most pink, I’ve been wearing quite a bit of blue lately. If you look closely, you’ll notice that the jeans I’m wearing have a small white print that sort of looks like those floating fuzzy dandelion heads set against the pale blue background. It’s a subtle, whimsical detail that I love…as for the striped-back tank, that was a pre-summer purchase I’ve been wearing non stop. It’s so light-weight that it feels like I’m wearing nothing and I really like how the back gives a menswear inspired look. Off topic bit totally relevant in the world of…

Off topic bit totally relevant in the world of online shopping: J.Crew is having a 30% sale on select styles. I picked up these sandals in the tan (have been waiting for them to go on sale!) and I’m loving these white shorts, these perforated leather shorts, this scallop-bottom short-sleeved sweater, and this tunic sweater. Go get your summer staples! Use code HISUMMER at checkout.
