I also think this dress is adorable and could be perfect for some upcoming events. These flats are SO cute and the color would be amazing with all washes of denim. I cannot get over how insane the price is of these! Pair them with a solid black dress and you’re good to go. And let’s be honest, if there was ever a time to splurge on a Self Portrait dress (or two!), now would be it!)

(We are desperate for a tree skirt, but I am pretty picky in terms of wanting something simple so that our ornaments can shine. This one in the winter white is perfect and it will look great with our needlepoint stockings that have a cream background. Ordering now so we can have it in time for getting our tree next week!)

Current Vibes

November 23, 2016

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving always seems like a busy day - whether you're traveling, cooking, or doing last minute grocery shopping - there is always something that needs to be done. While my husband and I aren't doing any traveling in our house today, Molly is en route to Kansas City as we speak. We will meet her there on Friday (can't wait!). Today will be spent getting our ducks in a row to bring a few things to my in-laws tomorrow - a yummy salad and a delish little appetizer. I went to the store yesterday, which I am so glad I did because even yesterday the place was a complete mad house. Since we leave town Friday and host a dinner that night in Kansas City, I'm also spending the day doing last minute laundry so that we can pack. I always leave laundry until the very.last.second. Here's to hoping that you have a successful day-before-Thanksgiving, no matter what you're doing! (gobble, gobble, keep reading for the vibes)

1. CRUSHING // STUTTERHEIM x GARANCE: My husband bought himself a Stutterheim raincoat while we were living in San Francisco during some major rain due to El Nino. Since then, I have been eternally jealous of his purchase and even more so each time it rains. Like yesterday here in Dallas. The company was started in Sweden in 2010 with a vision of creating beautiful yet functional rain gear and has since grown immensely. The raincoats are all handmade with a strong attention to detail out of a rubberized cotton with double welded seams. After seeing my husband’s jacket function first hand, it truly stands up to the elements – not a drop of water penetrates that thing. Just recently, Stutterheim collaborated with Garance Doré on a limited edition women’s jacket. The coat is color blocked in white, translucent, and Garance Doré’s signature pale pink. I love the translucent feature which adds an added interest might be my favorite part. But then again, I am a huge lover of any and all things pale pink.

2. BOOKMARKING // DOMINO’S NEW BOOK: I can’t remember the last time I picked up a new coffee table book. Although, I always have a wish list of them about a mile long including a specific wish list for books on our Amazon account. The latest to add to my endless list? domino’s newest book: “Your Guide to a Stylish Home.” The book is great because it has endless inspirational home images as well as goes into the details to make your house a home and what elements are needed. The guide showcases how to hang a gallery wall or how to make dark walls work. Small tweaks that can make a world of difference!

3. USING // PLUME: In an effort to go more natural and organic with my skincare and makeup, I was lucky enough to learn about Plume a little while back. Plume’s lash and brown serum is a plant derived formula meaning no strange chemicals are getting anywhere near your eyes, which scares my most of all because eyes are so sensitive! The serum does three things for your lashes (or brows) in that it hydrates the follicles, extends the longevity and growth of the hair follicles into a “prolonged growth stage”, and protects them from environmental stress like the sun. I will admit that when I first got my hands on the Plume serum I wasn’t the best at remembering to put it on, but once I finally got into the hang of it, I can safely say that I’ve seen steady growth! I apply the serum each night after my skincare routine and always make sure I give it time to “sink in” before going to bed. My lashes definitely have reaped the benefits of using Plume and now my only concern is that I always have back stock so that I can keep up the results! Even better than the results though, may be knowing that the product is completely natural and safe for constant and long term use.

4. LIGHTING // SKI HOUSE: With two big dogs at home, burning candles is a must. If my husband and I don’t burn one everyday I swear our house smells like dogs run the place. Which is crazy because they’re indoors 24/7 except for their two walks a day. That being said, we burn candles like crazy around here. With the holidays here, I am dying to add something a little more “festive” into the mix. LAFCO’s “Ski House” candle is the perfect winter and woodsy scent without being too much, like a cranberry scented candle for fall. I just can’t get around fruity scents! Once we return from our Thanksgiving travels, I may just have to make this guy mine.

5. ORDERING // LIPS + STRIPES: I’ve been feeling major vibes from J.Crew this week. First they offer the best sale they’ve ever had (40% off everything with code HOLIDAY), literally, never been done before and then, they send out a new catalogue that has me wanting to buy all the things with this epic sale. One of my favorite pieces from the catalogue was this embroidered lips striped tee. I was sure that I had enough long sleeved striped tees until I saw this one and now I just have to have it. I also have a feeling that its going to be one of those pieces to sell out fast, so with 40% off I’ve convinced myself to order it. Other favorites from the new arrivals? This festive cami that I’m wishing I had for my dinner on Fridaythis sweatshirt, and these fun earrings.

6. NEEDING // PACKING CUBES: When I traveled to Breckenridge the other week, I felt like I was way out of practice with my packing skills. Random pieces were just kind of floating in my bag and it felt unorganized. As if on cue, I came across Tour Paravel last week and am very intrigued by their packing cubes. The cubes come in a set of three sizes and can be used to categorize and separate items while packing. You can even use them for dirty laundry when heading back home, which is great because who likes to pack their dirty clothes with pieces they didn’t wear?!

7. LOVING // GUCCI W on GOOP: I first learned of makeup artist Gucci Westman from my friend Michaela who works in the fashion world in NYC. She bragged on her for creating that perfect “look” of being natural and not too overdone, which can be pretty difficult to do! I find makeup artists to be completely fascinating because I always wonder what they use on their own faces day in and day out. Goop recently met with Westman to learn of her must haves and how she packs those products when traveling. Tip: she always checks her luggage so that she can bring full sizes and not skimp on anything. A woman after my own heart. Every time I carry on my bag I regret thinking that I could go without a certain something from my daily routine. Even something as simple, yet necessary, as my hair detangling spray. What I loved most about reading of Gucci Westman’s favorites was learning that she prefers clean and nontoxic makeup. A double bonus – learning of a makeup artists musts that are also nontoxic. Some of her favorites are also favorites of mine (Tata Harper lip and cheek tintW3LL People Mascara, and RMS Living Luminizer), but there were also some that I am now dying to try. Including the RMS Bronzer, which is the one makeup item that I have yet to switch over to a clean version, but if this one’s good enough for Gucci, it has to be good! Be sure to read the write up, there are tons of other great products mentioned.

Beauty Brush Cleaning Made Easy

November 22, 2016

Did you know that Sally and I have three younger sisters? They are college and high-school ages and though there are years between us and some sisterly differences, one thing we all have in common is a deep love of makeup and beauty products. The first time I tried the GlamGlow Supermud mask was when I found it in my sister Lily's bathroom. Sally stole borrowed Grace's Bobbi Brown foundation when we were all in Austin for our sister-in-law's bachelorette party. And I'm frequently asking our youngest sister Sadie what mascara she's using (I got big giggles when she responded a few months ago with, "mostly Perversion"). Unlike me and Sally, our sisters are always on the up-and-up with what's new and amazing when it comes to beauty. All three of them were using BeautyBlenders long before we were and they're often schooling us in the latest and greatest.

When Sadie was visiting me and Sally in October we were discussing how often we clean our BeautyBlenders and Sadie mentioned that she would clean hers more often if she had a Sigma Mat like our sister Grace. Huh? What the heck is a Sigma Mat. Sadie explained that it was a great tool for cleaning brushes, duh. Over a month later, I decided to give this magic mat a try.

For someone who loves using make-up brushes for most all my beauty product application and has heavily invested in them, you would think I clean them more often. I’m very ashamed to say that I do not. They maybe get cleaned once every 6 months. Disgusting, I know! I did actually cleaned a few of my most-used brushes (bronzer, blush, and foundation) before Sadie’s visit…I had planned on doing all my brushes both for face and eyes but those three took me so much time that I lost steam and decided I would re-visit the task…later.

Fast forward a month and I got a silly skin infection on my face (so awesome!). My dermatologist recommended bathing in bleach and washing everything I own – including my make-up brushes. The task seemed daunting but I didn’t want the hellish infection to come back after finally clearing it up so I strode into the Nordstrom beauty department on a mission to get myself one of those Sigma Mats Sadie spoke of to help in the process. I found out very quickly that Sigma Beauty doesn’t just make one magical brush cleaning tools – they make several. There’s the Express Cleaning Mat (the one my sis Grace uses), a 2x Cleaning Glove, an Express Cleaning Glove, and a Dry ‘n Shape situation. Options! I jumped on the Express Cleaning Glove because it seemed like the best space saver and I liked that it could be worn on my hand but wasn’t a giant bit like the 2x Glove. I should note that I got the Express Cleaning Glove in-store for $25 but it’s only sold online in a “duo kit” that includes the glove and Sigma’s amazing Flat Kabuki Brush) for an awesome combined value (should be $50, sole for $39).Sigma sells their own brush shampoo but I already owned the i.D. ‘Well Cared For’ Brush Conditioning Shampoo so I decided not to get the Sigma version.

Once I got my very hot pink glove home I took it out of the packaging and scratched my head at the included instructions. Being the visual girl I am, I went to Sigma’s website and watched the video for the Express Glove so I knew exactly how to use the product (nerd alert). Then I gathered up about half my brushes (I decided to do them in two groups – what you see in this post is the first half) and my BeautyBlender, got my brush shampoo, and set up a little station at my bathroom sink.

The Express Glove has two sides – one for face brushes and one for eye brushes – each with different textures. There are seven textures and they are all marked with directional words like “refund, wash, rinse.” I started with the “face” side, making sure that those three textures were facing up, then slid my hand with my palm facing up through the wrist strap and my thumb through a side hole so that the silicone was nice and secure. Then I did the following with each face brush:

  • Got the glove wet with running water
  • Put a dime size amount of the brush cleaner on the middle “wash” section
  • Wet the hairs of selected brush beneath running water, then swirled in the brush cleaner directly on the textured surface
  • After swirling for several seconds, making sure that the cleaner was really worked into the brush hairs, I rinsed the glove under running water, swiped the brush head under running water, and returned to the “wash” section, swirling again. I repeated this process a couple times till I no longer saw any makeup residue on the glove
  • Then I held the front part of the glove (the “rinse” section) under running water and swept the brush vertically and horizontally over the texture to be sure all the makeup and soap was out
  • Lastly, I gently ran the brush head over the ridges on the side of the glove while squeezing water out with my thumb
  • There were a few brushes that had a ton of product in the brush hairs that I used the “refine” texture (the own closest to my wrist) for an extra deep cleaning

To do the eye brushes, I just rinsed the face side then turned the cupped part that went around my fingers inside out and slid my hand through the wrist strap as before but with the “eye” side facing up. Then I just followed the same steps above but with the “eye” textures (using about a third of the amount of cleaners per brush). I also got my BeautyBlender in on the action, gently rubbing it on the “wash” section of the face side. *If you do this, just be super careful – you don’t want to tear the foam of the BeautyBlender!

After gently squeezing out as much water as I could with the glove (you don’t want to pull ANY of the brush hairs out!) I laid each brush flat on a clean wash cloth. I’ve been told that this is the best way to dry brushes because standing them up to dry allows excess water to seep into the brush hairs in the metal part that connects to the brush handle. This is no bueno, those hairs will never dry and that’s just not clean. After letting the brushes sit flat while doing the cleaning, I took each one and gently swirled it on the wash cloth to fluff up the fibers a bit. Then I laid them down again and patently waited for them to dry (about 24 hours).

Two things:

  • No. 1: it is SO satisfying to see all the built-up product get cleaned and rinsed out of brushes. I did feel a little a bit of shame at having waited so long to get the gunk out but that was replaced with joy and followed by a promise to myself that I would do this once a month.
  • No. 2: I won’t lie, I was initially very skeptical of the Sigma brush cleaning tools. I mean, I trust my sisters and their beauty knowledge but I thought that having a tool devoted to the brush cleaning task seemed a little…excessive. Every time I had washed my brushes before I just put a little cleanser in my hand, and swirled a wet brush head in it repeatedly till it was clean and my hand looked like a prune. Let me just be the one to tell you: I got all my brushes clean in a ridiculously quick amount of time (maybe doing all of them in the time it took me to do three with my previous cleaning technique) and they really, really got clean (I didn’t just say “that looks good enough” and give up). I can say that I’m 100% a believer in the Sigma cleaning tools and am so glad I took note from my younger (and possibly wiser?) sisters and got one myself. I plan on sharing the Express Glove with Sally – because sharing is caring and sisters don’t let sisters use gunky beauty brushes.

The best part about having freshly cleaned brushes – aside from the fact of knowing that I’m not swiping hairs full of old makeup and dead skin on my face – is that they are so fluffy and soft. And cleaning them helps cut back those unwanted brush hairs that always seem to come off on my face when I’m using them.

My Best Life

November 21, 2016

I've said it before, but my "typical" day is never typical. I had more of a routine when I was living in Houston (up around 7:00am, workout class at 8:30am, etc.) but I have yet to establish a schedule in Dallas and my days consistently feel all over the place. All my actions are based on priority and my daily "to-do" list is always rearranging and shifting depending on deadlines, errands, meetings, etc. Adding my new puppy Rosebud to the mix has made things even more hectic.

I am not complaining. I know how blessed I am to work from home and have such a flexible schedule and creative job. But because my days often feel out of control I've developed practices to keep me feeling grounded. Keep reading to see how I try to live my best life in the midst of being slightly overwhelmed at all times!

None of the below are ground-breaking…but they’re habits I like to have in place to feel my personal best.

.Organization: I am very type-A in almost every aspect of my life. The only area where my love of the orderly and being self-critical fails is with my work. I’m a HUGE procrastinator and almost always leave things to the last minute. I like to think that this makes me a true creative – the 11th hour tends to be when I have the greatest surge of creative energy and my perfectionism still comes into play.

My type-A personality comes most into play with my need to have things organized at all times. I make my bed each morning, never leave dishes in my sink or dirty clothes on the floor, and I have a specific place for everything. To most people, this kind of behavior probably sounds exhausting…but it’s such second nature to me now that I find it soothing. Having things overly organized and being a total neat freak helps me to feel like I have some semblance of order in my chaotic life!

.Groceries: Some of my favorite things include a full tank of gas, a fully-charged phone battery, and a well-stocked refrigerator and pantry. I don’t know why but there’s something so pleasing about each. That being said, I hate going to the grocery store. It never feels like there’s a convenient time and I’m always convincing myself that I can stall on making the trip…that is until I realize that the only food I have is almonds and peanut butter. So I try to go once a week, I stock up on my daily necessities and usually sneak in one or two treats (chocolate and wine, always) and I come home feeling like I’ve won at life.

You would think that since I work from home that I’m always dying to get out of the house for meals, coffee, etc. Not so. I’m happy to eat the same thing and drink black coffee every day for breakfast, have a simple lunch, then do something more exciting for dinner. I feel my best when I can save money by going to the grocery store versus eating out. Eating from home makes the times I go out for food feel like such a treat and I love that.

.Vitamins: Adding vitamin supplements to my routine wasn’t super easy for me – some of the all-in-one multivitamins would make me feel sick, I was frequently forgetful about taking them, and I never knew which type/brand/dose was best for me. Once I figured out what I needed (on the advice of doctors and some research) I found that taking vitamins gave me increased energy and helped improve my overall health.

The easiest way I’ve found to stay on track with my vitamin taking is to store them all in the same place (the little wall cabinet in my guest bathroom is perfect for this), re-fill 7 day pill case with one of each vitamin every Sunday, and store the pill container where I keep my coffee so that I can take my daily assortment in the morning with my breakfast. To make things super easy, I order all my vitamins from Doctor’s Best – everything I need is in one place and I really trust the brand’s transparency and quality.

.Leisure: No matter how cray cray my days can seem, I frequently break away from my priorities and reserve 30 minutes to an hour each day for some “me.” Time. Sometimes this means taking nap, reading before bed, zoning out on Bravo TV, or shopping online. I wish I was more of a bath person because the idea sounds super soothing. I should probably add “taking relaxing baths” to my 2017 resolutions.

Along with my personal leisure activities I feel like my best (best, best, best) self when I plan time with friends and family during the week. Phone calls with my mom and dad, sister day dates with Sally or dinner and puppy play time wither her and my brother-in-law, hangouts with friends, etc. – they all make me feel most whole and happy.

I’m lucky that right now I get to focus so much on myself. It sounds narcissistic when I put it like that but besides my two puppies, the only person I’m responsible for is myself and there’s something nice about the self care I’m able to currently give myself. I have no idea what the future holds (tomorrow, next week, next year) and I’m always prepared for change, but I’m always going to make sure that no matter what, I continue to find ways to live my best life.

And y’all should be doing the same! Doctor’s Best agrees – so much so that they’re hosting a #MyBestLife contest! The contest is a simple:

  • Like the Doctor’s Best page on Facebook or follow them on Twitter or Instagram
  • Post a photo to one of your personal social accounts (Facebook, Twitter or Instagram) sharing how you live your “Best Life”
  • Be sure to use #MyBestLife for the post to count as a contest entry!

The grand prize is a Doctor’s Best vitamin package worth $200, as well as a prize relevant to your personal #MyBestLife entry worth $1,000. That means you get $1,000 to spend on what helps you live your best life. I’d use it for groceries (super exciting!) or towards a fun night with friends. Along with the grand prize winner, four runners-up will each receive a Doctor’s Best vitamin package worth $100. The contest runs from November 14th (11/14/16) to December 9th (12/9/16) so make sure you enter before time runs out!
