I never saw Bravo’s first season of Work of Art but I fully expected to not like the series – art is so subjective and some pieces take months to complete, I didn’t understand how artists could be judged in such quick-fire like challenges. I figured most of the artists would be chosen based on their personality differences and not on a talent basis. Last night was the premiere of the show’s second season. I didn’t really want to watch it but what was I going to do with the hour between RHW of Beverly Hills and the new ep of Top Chef Just Desserts? So I watched… and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up liking it. I loved how they introduced each artist with their self portraits – it was evident that each person had a favorite “medium” and or conceptual elements they liked to work with and it made me excited to see how the first impression Bravo gave us of their artistic style would translate into the first challenge.
The first challenge, in my opinion, was very engaging – the artists chose a “kitschy” piece of art work from a large selection and had to transform the pieces into “gallery” worthy finished products while keeping a recognizable piece of the original kitschy art intact in the transformation. Watching the contestants work through their concepts in the studio made me wish I could teleport myself back to my freshman year fine art studio classes… It’s so inspiring to see people being so creative and working towards an end product. Basically I can’t wait till next week. I’m still not sure who my favorites are but judging from last night, I’d say the girls of the group will be the ones to beat…

Interesting take on the show, I see it a bit differently. I did watch the entire first season.
