Started in 2007 by supermodel/actress and World Health Organization’s Goodwill Ambasador for Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health, Liya Kebede, Lemlem is a line of Women’s and Children’s clothing made by traditional weavers in Ethiopia. Liya started the company when she noticed the number of women who were losing their jobs due to a decline in demand. She wanted to preserve the art of weaving in the native country and share the beauty of the work with others. I first saw Lemlem when J.Crew featured Liya on their website and started carrying the brand. This was maybe two years ago? Now Lemlem is carried not only at J.Crew, but Barneys and Net-a-Porter as well. And the brand has created their own website where you can buy their beautiful pieces. In just four short years, Liya’s company is already a huge success! Not only does it support a good cause, but every single one of Lemlem’s pieces is truly a work of art and unlike anything I have ever seen. The sheer fabrics mixed with the stripes also make these pieces classic and timeless. Sounds like I need to make a donation/purchase! (All images via Lemlem)
