To quote my buddy Lauren Conrad from an episode of The Hills, “You know you’re growing up when you want stuff for your apartment.” I’m going to say that you know you’re really growing up when you want to start collecting real art for your apartment. Not posters, or flags, or cheap canvases that anyone else can find – but good finds that are investments you will take no matter where you live. No one my age is doing this better than Bradley of Luella & June. Not only is her apartment decorated perfectly for a twenty-something (pretty, put-together, great pieces, and not too grown-up), but she is growing such an amazing collection of art… Not just buying pieces for the sake of filling up wall space, but finding just the right things to play to her style and taste. She has some paintings, collages, and photographs – all framed and hanging in complimentary locations and all things that I would steal off her wall in put in my own place if she would let me.
A couple of weekends ago Bradley and I were both enjoying a Saturday happy hour party after the first day of Blogshop at a new hip Dallas gallery called Fresh New Wave (2420 South Irving Blvd.)… It’s a space founded by two young guys and houses the works of young Texas artists. Pretty cool. Of course Bradley spots a new favorite to add to her collection – a large scale, bright-colored print of a Mayan temple (way cool, and a great price). She also pointed out a painted nude piece and told me not to think she was weird for liking it. I told her, “Oh no – not weird at all. My mom always told me that you need a good nude in your home… Nude painting that is.” Finding a good nude can be tricky – it has to be the opposite of vulgar and more about texture and stroke versus realistic. Nothing like that scene in Titanic that your parents wouldn’t let you watch. So there you have it. Never dismiss the nude art advice of a woman with good taste. Especially when it parallels the opinions of a young and fun art connoisseur I’ll let you know if I find any frame-worthy nudes.

Haha nudity in art…there used to be an ethnic import store in my downtown and they had the most fabulous portraits of natives…almost like caricatures. I still wish I would have snagged a few, but when you aren't an adult, I'd say it's a little strange to add nudes to your art collection =)
I couldn't agree more. I think a simple nude looks so classic, especially in the bedroom or bathroom. The form of the human body is beautiful, and displaying a delicate print or painting isn't racy or weird at all.
I love this post. You're so sweet. Come on over and steal some of this art! And I've been thinking about your nude quote since that night. SO true. We both need some good nudes!… paintings of course.

Just lovely. I think nude art is beautiful when done right!

Love this post – and it's so true! My heart was stolen by a nude as well
