Molly might not be ready to give up her jorts and summer wear but I for one am pretty freaking excited to start dressing for fall. If Dallas wasn’t still experiencing 100 degree days you would find me laying a lot of my tried and true basics from spring/summer with my fall-ish items. I’m not the person that starts wearing Uggs in September or pulls out my darkest denim right after labor day… You’ll still see me wearing white jeans in October but I’ll pair them with a navy blazer and booties to keep them from looking like summer. It’s a tricky balance easing into fall – so I’ve pulled together a couple looks I have been thinking about that are super transitional. And not just transitional to take you from summer to fall but also day to night. P.S. most of the items are from Wallis, a great online store for affordable basics in great cuts!
.Day to Night Dress: Take any sleeveless or short-sleeved dress you wore this summer and put a complimentary blazer with it. Appropriate for the office and perfect for dinner or drinks afterwards (just take off the blazer). Tips: keep the blazer unbuttoned and cuffed at the sleeves to keep it from looking too dressy. Even if your blazer is light (grey, white, tan) and your dress is a bold color – you can bring in a fall aesthetic with “darker” accessories that lend more to the season.
.Working a fun Print: Leopard is a year-round print in my closet and it looks good on everyone. But it is especially great in the fall with the brown and tan color scheme. This pencil skirt is a perfect staple. And to keep things from looking too heavy as we transition seasons, wear an ivory or white top and nude pumps (everyone needs these in their closet)! When things get colder, keep the same look but add a black blazer. It’s a neutral look because of the pallet but the leopard keeps it from being boring. Do the same thing with a monochromatic floral or python print skirt.
.Laid Back Weekend Look: I’d by lying if I said I didn’t live for the weekend and the comfy clothes that come with it. Fall means finally getting back into my blue jeans (it’s been white jeans only around here) and booties… I love cozy knits but I’ll wear more open weaves in lighter hues till it really starts to cool down. Keep the color from summer rolling with bright/neon accessories – yes, you can still wear that shocking pink and loud yellow, just balance it with textures that make sense for the season.
So hard to avoid shopping when fall clothes always look so good after a hot summer! I suggest shopping the end of summer sales for pieces that will still transition into fall and keep your eye on the fall basics you can’t live without before the sell out in your size…
